LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel 2.0: How to Move Your LinkedIn Followers to Substack
It's no secret that social media has become the go-to place for building an audience. But here's the thing – after growing my LinkedIn following to 120K+ and running a six-figure writing & coaching business for nearly 10 years, I learned a hard truth: we don't actually own our social media audience.
Let me tell you a quick story. After being let go from my job as a wine shop manager, I turned to LinkedIn to build my freelance writing business. Little did I know that layoff would lead to a six-figure business that allows me to work from anywhere in the world. But there was still something missing – true ownership of my audience.
That's why I developed the LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel 2.0, a strategy that helped me convert my LinkedIn presence into 3,000+ Substack subscribers in less than 9 months. And the best part? It only took a few hours per week.
Why You Need Your Own Digital Real Estate
Think about it like this – building an audience on LinkedIn is like renting a luxury apartment. Sure, it's nice, but your landlord (in this case, LinkedIn) can change the rules whenever they want. Your newsletter and email list? That's like owning your own house. No one can take that away from you.
Based on recent data, it would have cost me an average of $3000-$5000 to acquire 2000 email subscribers using Facebook ads alone. But with the LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel 2.0, I did it for free. Let's talk about how.
The Secret Sauce: Your Substack “Hero Posts”
Here's a wild thought: what if I told you that 2-3 pieces of content could drive your entire Substack growth and monetization strategy? I'm not talking about just any content – I'm talking about Hero Posts.
I discovered this strategy earlier this fall when I wrote my original LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel post. I kept linking back to it and sharing it everywhere. The response was incredible, and that's when I had my "aha! moment."
Think of your “Hero Post” like that showstopper car in a luxury dealership. It's not just another article – it's your masterpiece that makes people stop and think, "Wow, this person really knows their stuff."
How the LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel 2.0 Actually Works
Let me break down the process that's been working for me:
Create a killer Hero Post & pin it to the top of your Substack
Add your Substack link to your LinkedIn profile (they now have this cool "enhanced profile" feature)
Share daily sharable LinkedIn content that makes people want to visit your profile
Use LinkedIn newsletters to build a bridge to Substack
Watch the magic happen
The way LinkedIn's algorithm works is pretty simple: post something engaging, and LinkedIn will share it with a handful of your first-level connections. If they engage, it goes to more people. And on and on...
…these are eyeballs on your LinkedIn profile and potential Substack subscribers.
The 24/7 Income Engine (My Favorite Part)
Now, here's where things get really interesting. Your “Hero Post” isn't just showing off – it's the first domino in your monetization strategy. Inside each “Hero Post,” I place a link to a valuable lead magnet. Something so good that readers can't help but click.
For example, I might offer templates, a checklist, or a mini-course that solves a specific problem. Once they download it, they enter my email sequence, which works 24/7, automatically nurturing leads and presenting my digital products at just the right moment.
The Ninja Move Most People Miss
Here's a secret weapon: your Substack welcome email. When someone subscribes to your newsletter, they're super excited to hear from you. They’re the most engaged with you at this moment. That's when you hit them with a link back to your Hero Post.
Think about it: They just subscribed, they're pumped to learn from you, and boom – you give them your absolute best content right out of the gate. It's like serving your signature dish to a first-time restaurant guest.
Then, your “Hero Post” links to your lead magnet and email sequence (and ultimately a digital product or offer which makes you money).
Making This Work For You
Want to implement this in your own newsletter? Here's your gameplan:
Start with one flagship Hero Post that shows off your best insights
Pack it with so much value that people can't help but share it
Add an irresistible lead magnet (top and bottom of the post)
Set up a simple welcome sequence
Share consistently on LinkedIn (5-6 times per week)
Watch your subscriber list grow
The platform has millions of active subscribers but less than 1% are considered very active (and probably only 1% of 1% actually understand how LinkedIn works). What I'm saying is that LinkedIn is a goldmine that's yet to be tapped.
How to Profit from This Flywheel
LinkedIn is a goldmine and Substack is a goldmine. When you combine these two platforms, you have the ability to set your business and brand on fire.
You can:
Convert free Substack subscribers to paid ones
Offer digital products like e-books or courses
Provide 1-on-1 coaching (one of the quickest ways to monetize)
Create templates or masterclasses
Build a community around your expertise
Remember: People want to hear from you. Don't even think that you don't have a voice worth listening to. As long as you are a few steps ahead of your target audience, you can teach someone how to do something and invite them into your daily world.
The Best Business Model for 2025
If you’ve been looking for a business to grow part- or full-time, newsletters are it. You have the ability to grow an audience that you own and make automatic income from digital products and other offers 24/7.
Newsletters (like Substack) have a compound effect. As long as you’re providing quality content and getting more subscribes (than unsubscribes), you’ll continue to grow. The biggest question I get from newbies on Substack is, “How can I grow my Substack more quickly?”
…and now you have the answer. It’s LinkedIn. Start putting this LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel into practice, and you’ll start growing faster than you ever imagined.
Can I Ask a Question?
What's holding you back from starting your newsletter journey? Is it the content creation? The technical setup? Let me know in the comments, and let's solve it together.

Great post.
When you repurpose your Substack posts to LinkedIn, what format do you use for the repurposed post?
Great advice, Wes. I’ve been a fan of an impactful hero post for a long time. When used in conjunction with a free PDF (link delivered via the Welcome email) or other opt-in offer, and your About page, a boost in subs is a natural result.
