The Beginner's Guide to Writing Viral Substack Notes that Get Noticed
How to start writing Substack Notes that get noticed and help your Substack grow
Staring at your subscriber count hoping it'll magically increase?
Been there. Last year, I spent weeks watching my numbers stay frozen at ~100 subscribers, despite writing what I thought were great posts.
Then everything changed.
I discovered how to use Substack Notes strategically, and within 30 days, I was getting 10+ new subscribers daily. No paid ads. No growth hacks. Just a system that works.
Let me show you how.
Why Notes Matter (More Than You Think)
Here's what nobody tells you about Substack Notes: it's not social media. It's not Twitter. It's not LinkedIn.
It's a community of writers supporting writers.
But, it’s not just for writing who write about writing. Anybody in any niche can write Notes and grow subscribers (when you understand how the platform works).
When I finally understood this, everything shifted.
While most writers focus entirely on their newsletter posts, the real growth happens in Notes.
Think about it: When was the last time you randomly discovered a great newsletter post from someone you don't follow? It rarely happens.
But Notes? They show up in your feed constantly. They're digestible. They're engaging. And most importantly – they're your secret weapon for consistent, daily growth.
The Three Types of High-Converting Notes
After analyzing hundreds of successful Notes, I've identified three types that consistently drive growth:
1. Introduction Notes: The Community Builders
Perfect for new writers
Create instant connections
Drive immediate engagement
Builds a community first

1 // Choose a broad niche at first or combine 2-3 sub-niches into one.

The Notes Strategy That Works for Beginners
Here's my daily system for consistent growth:
1. Write more Notes
Write 2 to 3 Notes minimum
The more you write, the better you get
The more you write, you detach from the outcome
Batch write them and post throughout the day
2. Engagement Strategy
Respond to comments as you can
Follow active writers in your niche
Go out and comment on new Notes, too
People will come back and follow / subscriber
3. Formatting for Impact
Use white space
Add bullet points
Bold key messages
Keep it skimmable
1-2 emojis is ok, too
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Let's be real: most Notes fail because people treat them like tweets or LinkedIn posts. They drop random thoughts and wonder why nobody engages.
Don't make these mistakes:
Posting without a clear purpose
Ignoring formatting
Being inconsistent
Focusing only on yourself
Why Notes is the Best Way for Beginners to Grow
If you’re brand new on Substack, getting consistent with Notes is the best way to grow. Especially if you don’t have another platform to bring followers over from.
When you follow the strategy mentioned above, you should begin growing by 5 to 10+ new subscribers a day. Don’t forget to go out and comment / like / restack other people’s Notes. They’ll appreciate the engagement and come check out your Notes, too.
These new visitors to your Notes will organically check out your Substack. That will lead to more subscribers if your vibe aligns with their vibe.

The truth? Growth isn't about being “perfect.” [or insert another line here]
It's about showing up consistently and finding your voice. Keep writing.
P.S. Restack this Note ♻️ so we can encourage the next person to press on.
Why this template works?
Every Note doesn’t need to be about your niche. That’s too “on the nose.” Just get people talking and sharing their voice in the comments. This will organically lead people to your Substack and ultimately encourage them to subscribe, if they’re a good fit.
Building Sustainable Growth
