How to Turn a $20 Freelancing Client into $10,000+ & a Six-Figure Career
With a 5-step blueprint to launch your freelancing career on LinkedIn
My freelancing career started with a $20 client. Well, let’s be honest. It wasn’t a career at first. It was me wandering around the internet, figuring out if the whole “make money online” thing actually worked.
Thankfully, I learned it does in fact work.
That first $20 Fiverr client was the catalyst that set my entire freelancing career into motion. Landing that first $20 client was a confirmation that I maybe I could actually do this whole “laptop lifestyle” thing.
After closing out that $20 client, I turned it into over $10,000+ over the next year. How? Well, I overdelivered and treated that $20 project like it was a $2000 project. The client was so happy with the deliverables that she kept giving me more and more work.
I was hooked. I didn’t do much more on Fiverr, but I did have a successful stint on Elance and Upwork, climbing the ladder into the top #3 resume writers on those platforms.
While the gig sites helped me replace my income as a wine shop manager, it was LinkedIn that helped me scale up to six-figures per year.
LinkedIn allowed me to grow an online professional presence and connect with literally millions of potential clients at my fingertips.
I owe a lot to LinkedIn. When you know how to tap into LinkedIn, it really can become a goldmine.
My 5-Step Formula to Earning Six-Figures in Freelancing Income
Step 1: Choose One Skill
It’s ok to have many interests and offer several services on the backend but choose one main skill that you’ll become known for. The “generalists” aren’t the ones who get paid top dollar; it’s the “specialists” who are most in demand (and paid for their specialty).
Step 2: Set Up Your Simple Brand
Next, you’ll need some type of presence online to look legit. This also helps clients find you more easily and build enough trust for clients to hire you. LinkedIn is my favorite platform to build this simple brand, as most features are free and there’s millions of profiles globally.
Step 3: Optimize Your Profile
The next step includes optimizing your profile for keywords and content. Your headline makes a huge impact on your profile’s searchability, as well as the “Skills” and “About” section. I’d also recommend setting up a “Services Page” where LinkedIn will send you leads directly.
Step 4: Increase Awareness
Once you’ve set up your profile and online presence, you can start increasing awareness of your services by networking. Notice I didn’t say that posting content was the main way to grow awareness.
The way LinkedIn works is that you can make first level connections, and this makes it easier for people to find you who might be looking for your services.
The next logical step is posting daily content to grow awareness. You can post highly sharable videos and quotes while giving your perspective and ideas. This helps you to quickly grow followers and boost awareness of your services. However, you can start a freelancing operation on LinkedIn without ever posting content.
Step 5: Gather Reviews
Social proof is one of the most powerful psychology sales principles there is. As you begin closing client projects, simply ask them to leave you a 5-star review on your Google Business Page or a recommendation on your LinkedIn profile.
Having dozens (or hundreds) of reviews / recommendations will help clients feel more comfortable working with you.
Now It’s Your Turn
Once you’ve established the foundation of your freelancing operation, you can scale up to six-figures one of two ways:
Charge more for your services
Complete more projects
There’s an art to doing both and figuring out which one works best for your lifestyle. The first step is to simply get started. This is the absolute best time to start your freelancing career, whether full-time or part-time. There’s endless opportunity out there and LinkedIn is the best place to discover it.

It’s like doctors. The surgeon who can treat a specific heart condition in a specific age group is a hot commodity than the regular heart specialists who treat everyone. Great share @Wes Pearce
