"Another day, zero new subscribers."
Those were the words I told myself last summer, staring at my Substack dashboard. The number hadn't moved in days. Actually, that's not true – I'd gained 3 subscribers in the past week. And lost 2.
I was spending hours crafting what I thought were "perfect" posts. Researching. Writing. Editing. Rewriting. Each one took 3-4 hours minimum.
And for what? To watch my subscriber count barely move while others seemed to grow effortlessly?
The worst part? I was doing everything "right":
Publishing consistently twice per week
Sharing on social media
Engaging with other writers
Creating valuable, in-depth content
But something was missing. Something big.
What I learned next changed everything…
The Hidden Growth Engine I Almost Missed
Then one day, while scrolling through my Substack feed, I noticed something interesting.
A writer I followed had gone from 200 to 2,000 subscribers in just two months. What caught my eye wasn't just the growth – it was how he were using Substack Notes in a way I'd never seen before.
I had tried Notes in the past and honestly just didn’t get it. I wrote a few and got crickets. (maybe you can relate?) I just gave up on it altogether. But, everything changed when I started diving into Notes…
I started studying Notes obsessively. The patterns. The timing. The engagement. Everything.
That's when I discovered what I now call the "Notes Multiplier Effect" – a specific way of using Notes that turns casual readers into devoted subscribers.
The results? In the next 30 days:
400+ new subscribers (compared to 3 the previous month)
35-40% open rates on my newsletter
A thriving community of engaged readers
10 to 30+ new subscribers joining every single day
To be honest, Notes saved my Substack. And, I wish I’d tried it earlier.
Why Most Writers Fail at Notes (It's Not What You Think)
Here's what nobody tells you about Substack Notes: it's not social media. It's not Twitter/X. It's not LinkedIn.
Most writers fail because they treat Notes like any other platform. They drop random thoughts and wonder why nobody engages.
The truth? Notes is a completely different game with its own rules, psychology, and success patterns.
Think about it…When was the last time you randomly discovered a great newsletter post from someone you don't follow? It rarely happens.
But Notes? They show up in your feed constantly. They're digestible. They're engaging. And most importantly – they're your secret weapon for consistent, daily growth.
The Strategy That Changed Everything
After months of testing (and plenty of failed Notes), I cracked the code. Here's a glimpse of what I discovered:
1. The "Scroll-Stop" Hook Formula
Not all Notes are created equal. There's a specific structure that makes people stop scrolling and start engaging.
2. The Perfect Timing Window
Posting at random times kills your reach. There are specific windows where engagement skyrockets.
3. The Conversion Bridge
Getting likes is nice. Getting subscribers is better. I discovered how to turn Note readers into newsletter subscribers, consistently. Make people want to subscribe.
Quick Win: Write about a Current Trend
One of the best ways to get your Note noticed is to write about a current trend. Right now, that trend is the recent “TikTok ban.”
Even though the ban was less than 24 hours, it got everyone’s attention.
Here’s the note:
The next wave of Substack creators aren’t going to be TikTok dancers. They’re:
Working from kitchen tables
Writing between meetings
Building while the world sleeps
They’re regular people like you & me, working 9to5’s and writing when they can.
Moms, dads, teachers, gas station cashiers…
Great Substacks are raw and authentic. They share the up’s & down’s and that’s why we love them.
Keep your eye out for trends. Notice what others are writing about, on Notes but also other platforms, too. Think about how that trend could relate to your niche.
You don’t have to be right “on the nose.” We can almost always tie a current trend (or news) into our own niche and audience. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing all about how to do this perfectly inside my upcoming workshop.
Your Path to 10+ Daily Subscribers
This isn't just theory. I've tested this system with writers across different niches:
A fiction writer who went from 50 to 500 subscribers in 6 weeks
A finance writer who doubled their subscription rate
A food blogger who built her first 1,000-person audience
And now, I want to share everything I've learned with you.
Introducing: The “10+ Subscribers a Day” Substack Notes Workshop
