I used to celebrate getting 100,000 views on LinkedIn posts.
Know what my bank account celebrated? Zero dollars.
Only 12 months ago, I was that person you probably know (or maybe you are that person) – posting consistently, getting decent engagement, building what looked like "influence."
I'd refresh my notifications constantly. Each new wave of likes gave me a tiny dopamine hit. My analytics showed millions of impressions. People were even calling me a "LinkedIn influencer."
But something felt off.
While I was busy chasing views, other creators with SMALLER audiences were:
Landing $10k consulting contracts
Selling out cohort-based courses
Building 6-figure newsletters
Getting paid speaking gigs
Generating passive income through digital products
The wake-up call came during a coffee chat with Sarah, another creator in my space. Her audience was 1/3 the size of mine, but she'd just closed $27,000 in client work and digital product sales in the last 30 days.
"What am I missing?" I asked her.
Her answer changed everything: "You're building an audience. I'm building a business."
That conversation forced me to confront an uncomfortable truth: I'd become "LinkedIn Famous" but was leaving serious money on the table.
The biggest mistake? I was treating LinkedIn as a standalone platform rather than part of a larger ecosystem. I had no way to capture and nurture the attention I was getting.
Here's what happened when I shifted my approach:
First 30 days: Set up a Substack and converted 500+ LinkedIn followers into subscribers
60 days: Launched my first masterclass and made $3000+ that month
90 days: Landed 2 consulting clients ($8,400) through newsletter readers
6 months: Sold out 5 masterclasses generating $20K+ in total sales
Next 6 Months? Launching my paid membership via Substack for Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)
The craziest part? I'm posting LESS than before. But every post / newsletter has intention. Every piece of content feeds into a larger system – what I now call the LinkedIn-Substack Flywheel.
Instead of just posting and praying, I've built a content ecosystem where:
LinkedIn provides visibility and reach
Substack captures and nurtures the audience
The combination creates multiple revenue streams
Want a quick win?
I want to give you some immediate value. So, here's the simple post template that generated $4,700 in revenue last month:
Hook: "The expensive mistake I see [your target audience] making..."
Story: Share specific example (can be you or a client, someone you know, etc.)
Solution: Your unique approach (or I call it your “mechanism”)
Proof: One concrete result (or social proof testimonial)
Offer: Subtle mention of how you help
CTA: "Found this helpful? I share more [topic] insights in my newsletter"
This is just scratching the surface of what's possible when you approach LinkedIn strategically.
The Hook, The Story, and The Plan
Let’s dive into these insights a bit further…
The Hook Formula: Instead of generic openings, call out a specific pain point. For example, rather than "5 tips for better content," try "The content strategy that's actually hurting your growth." Make it personal and slightly uncomfortable – that's what stops the scroll.
The Story Structure: Your story needs three parts…
The situation (what you/your client were doing)
The struggle (why it wasn't working)
The shift (the moment everything changed) Keep each part to 2-3 sentences max. LinkedIn rewards concise storytelling.
The Implementation Plan: Here's exactly how to use this template this week…
Look at your last 5 LinkedIn posts
Find the one that got the most engagement
Identify the core lesson/insight
Rewrite it using this template, but add your newsletter link
Post it when your audience is most active and use a piece of viral or sharable media (viral video, quote, etc.)
Pro Tip: Create a “hero post” on your Substack specifically for LinkedIn traffic. This is a longer post that’s set up to show your authority and build social proof.
Don't just drop them into your general subscription page. Give them a reason to subscribe right now – maybe a free template, checklist, or exclusive insight.
