Growing a Substack is Like Growing a Houseplant: How to Water Your Substack Everyday & Watch it Grow
Give your Substack time to grow and watch it turn into a thriving garden 🌱 10X your growth with these daily watering tips
Ever plant a flower seed and try to watch it grow? You plant on Monday and then Tuesday come back to see if it’s sprouted yet. Nothing.
Come back on Wednesday and give it a little water. Still nothing. Thursday, Friday, Saturday goes by. Nothing.
You decide to just leave the little seedling alone, visiting every couple of days to give it a little water and love.
Then one day, a couple weeks later, there it is. A little green sign of life sprouts up out of the dirt. You officially have a growing plant. After it’s sprouted, it seems like it just keeps growing and growing, until finally you have a full-grown beautiful flower.
That’s kind of what’s like when growing a Substack. Or anything really. It takes time, water, sunlight, and love.
Have you ever posted a new article on Substack or a new Note and gone back every 20 minutes to see how many “likes” you got? Or check your “New Subscriber” metric every day, hoping it’s increased? Even a little?
We’ve all done it. However, the best strategy is to give yourself time. Your Substack needs room to breathe. Don’t rush the process.
Watering our Substack looks like this:
Here’s what taking time to water our Substack daily looks like. Staying consistent with these actions is the best way to grow our little space in the world.
Carving out time to write
Create a daily habit of writing. Even if it’s 15 minutes. When we make it a habit and work it into our daily routine, we’re much more likely to stay consistent.
Sharing our Substack on socials
If you want to supercharge your Substack growth, share your new posts on at least one social platform (outside Notes). Personally, I love LinkedIn, but any of the platforms could work.
Collaborating with other Stackers
This is one of the coolest things I’ve found in the Substack community. People are very willing to partner with you and share recommendations, guest posts, and support.
Take time to rest and get creative
Have you ever sat down and forced yourself to be creative? It’s tough. Sometimes it’s best to step away and give your mind some rest. Go for a walk. Read a book. Take a shower. Our best ideas come when our minds are at rest.
Writing a Note & supporting others
Notes is such a great feature of Substack. Start making a daily habit of writing a Note and study others’ viral notes to get inspiration. One great Note can bringing in dozens of new subscribers.
Give yourself time to grow. If you make watering your Substack a daily habit, you’ll look up months from now and realize you have a thriving garden.
Question - What does your daily Substack watering routine look like? What advice can you give a new Stacker on how to grow?

As a gardener and farmer - this makes perfect sense to me!
So true! 🌱💚 As a plant mom to 40+ green babies, your analogy grabbed my attention & drove the point home! Developing an audience takes time no matter where you publish. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. This is where Atomic Habits kick in & newbies (like me 🙋♀️) have to trust the process while finding joy & delight in the journey!
