This last week, Escape the Cubicle is celebrating crossing the 7000+ subscriber milestone. 🍾🙌
Pretty wild considering I just relaunched this newsletter mid-2024, a little over 6 months ago. I’m grateful for each and every person who reads this Substack.
In milestone celebratory fashion, I wanted to share 5 lessons I’ve learned over the last 6 months. These are all lessons learned from being in the trenches, writing a few posts/notes that went “semi-viral” and writing plenty that flopped.
Please note: I had no idea what I was doing in the beginning. I was burnt out from my day job, working 1on1 with clients as a resume writer & career coach.
I knew I needed to make some type of change, but I wasn’t sure what. At first, I thought about starting a YouTube channel. But, I quickly realized I hated making videos. And even more, I don’t enjoy talking on camera.
While talking with a good friend, he reminded me to “stick with your strengths.” My strength is writing. I’m a writer.
So, Substack it was. I relaunched my newsletter and started writing about how to “escape the cubicle” by finding your voice and building something online. It’s working.
5 Lessons I’ve Learned from 7000+ Subscribers
Lesson #1: You have to write about something you enjoy. This seems obvious, right? However, it’s tempting to write about what you THINK people want to read.
To an extent, you do. But if you don’t truly enjoy the niche, you’ll burn out.
Lesson #2: You need to solve problems. Unless you’re writing fiction or just writing for a hobby (which there’s nothing wrong with), you need to solve audience problems.
If you can help people solve their problems, they’ll stay subscribers for life.
Lesson #3: Don’t go at this alone. I’m a bit of a lone wolf; it’s just my nature. However, writing can be too lonely to do it solo.
Find other writers you can connect with, whether it’s your subscribers or your peers.
Lesson #4: Stay consistent for at least 6 months. I had a few posts pop off early, which was an encouraging sign. But I’m a firm believer you need to stay at this for 6+ months before you’ll see any major growth.
If you commit to writing & growing for 6 months, suddenly you’ll look up and you’ll be a Bestseller.
Lesson #5: Don’t wait to monetize. You can start earning money from Day 1 by turning on paid subscriptions or offering a simple digital product.
You’ll have readers who want more help from you beyond free content. Serve your audience by giving them some type of premium product.
Thank You for Being Here
Growing this Substack has been truly enjoyable over the last 6 months. I’ve been able to connect with so many subscribers in my Chat with weekly “Notes Boosts” and through my masterclasses.
As cliché as it sounds, it’s been a breath of fresh air. I’ve gotten out of my burnt out “funk” and enjoyed writing again.
What’s Next for Escape the Cubicle?
Over the last week, I’ve been hinting at my upcoming paid subscription here on Substack. Each month, I’ll be creating a new workshop just for my community members to help them grow.
You’ll be able to officially join the community no later than this upcoming Monday, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, I want to celebrate the 7000+ subscriber milestone with a “sale” on my most popular masterclasses. I’ve had 100’s+ of people take these classes over the last few months, and I’ve received so much kind feedback.
One subscriber told me he grew 600+ subscribers in a single month after taking my class. Another subscriber said she went “semi viral” on Notes from my templates. Good stuff.
📌 Start Growing & Monetizing on Substack
Here’s how this will work. I’ve dropped the price on each of my main masterclasses and have them linked below. I’m going to keep these open until early next week and then they’ll go back up to normal.
(1) Six-Figure Substack Growth Masterclass
If you’re starting (or restarting) your Substack, this is the class to help you build a solid foundation. You’ll learn the exact strategy that’s helped me grow from Zero to 7000+ subscribers in a little over six months:
(2) “10+ Subscribers a Day” Notes Growth Workshop
If you’re wanting to start writing on Notes consistently, this workshop will help you “crack the code.” Because let’s be honest, Notes is confusing.
It was confusing for me, too, until I starting testing things and figured it out. Last weekend, I grew by 200+ subscribers in a single weekend, mostly from Notes:
(3) Six-Figure Digital Product Masterclass
Lastly, this training will give you a strategy for creating your first (or next) simple digital product. I’m a firm believer that simple, low-ticket digital products are one of the best ways to start monetizing your newsletter from Day 1:
Can’t wait to see where the next 6 months takes this Substack. I have some cool posts coming up in the next few weeks on how to grow your newsletter.
And, excited to finally open up the paid subscription here (or what we’re calling the “Substack Growth Squad).
If you’re unsure which class is best for you, just drop a comment below:
