31 Ideas to Monetize Your Substack. Even if You’re Starting from Scratch.
How to start earning from Day 1 - even if you have nothing to sell (or are a complete beginner)
I sat at my desk staring at my Substack stats, feeling that familiar knot in my stomach.
1,000 subscribers. Zero dollars.
Everyone tells you to "build an audience first, monetize later." But what they don't tell you is how paralyzing it feels when "later" arrives and you're still not sure how to turn those subscribers into sustainable revenue.
Maybe you can relate?
You've worked hard growing your newsletter. You're consistently putting out valuable content. Your subscribers are engaging. But when it comes to actually making money? You're stuck.
Here's what makes it worse: everywhere you look, the advice seems to be the same - "Just launch a $10/month paid subscription and you’ll be fine"
But here's what everyone misses: the most successful newsletter creators aren't relying on paid subscriptions alone. In fact, many are building six-figure businesses without ever turning on their paid tier.
I know because I've done it.
For the past decade, I've run a six-figure services business, primarily through my newsletter email list and LinkedIn audience. What started as a simple resume writing service has expanded into career coaching, digital products, masterclasses, and multiple revenue streams - all powered by my online audience.
But it wasn't always this way.
I used to think I had to choose between:
Charging for subscriptions and potentially losing readers
Keeping everything free and struggling to monetize
Creating an extensive course (that would take months to build)
(…and let’s be honest: aren’t we a little burnt out on courses? Nobody actually finishes them and they take a long time to create.)
The reality? Those are all myths. There are actually 31 different ways you can monetize your newsletter audience - and most of them can be started this week.
In this post, I'm going to share every single monetization strategy I've either personally used or seen work effectively for other creators. Some might surprise you. Others you may have never considered. But all of them are proven to work in 2025.
The best part? You don't need:
A massive audience
A paid subscription tier
A fancy course platform
Complex tech setup
You just need an engaged audience (even if it's small) and the right strategy...
The Real Reason Most Writers Struggle to Make Money
Here's the uncomfortable truth about running a newsletter:
The endless content treadmill is exhausting. You spend hours crafting the perfect posts, engaging with readers, growing your audience... all while watching your bank account stay exactly the same.
Meanwhile, it feels like everyone else is figuring it out:
That writer who started after you just launched a $500 course
The newsletter you follow just announced their first sponsor
Your competitor's paid subscription tier seems to be thriving
And the advice you find online? It's either:
"Just keep writing great content!" (Okay, but bills need to be paid...)
"Launch a $10/month subscription…" (As if it were that simple...)
"Create an online course…" (We already covered this...)
The pressure builds because you know your window of opportunity might not last forever. Attention spans are getting shorter. The newsletter space is getting more crowded. And your engaged audience today might not be as engaged six months from now.
But here's what makes this really frustrating...
You're doing everything "right":
Consistently publishing valuable content
Growing your subscriber count
Building relationships with readers
Engaging with your community
Yet the path from "newsletter writer" to "profitable business owner" remains frustratingly unclear.
I know exactly how this feels because I was stuck in the same place. Looking at my growing subscriber count but feeling that disconnect between "audience growth" and actual revenue.
But then I discovered something that changed everything...
The Simple Shift That Changes Everything
The breakthrough happened during a conversation with one of my resume clients.
"Your newsletter is so helpful," she said. "I'd honestly pay just to pick your brain for an hour about my career transition."
That's when it hit me.
I had been thinking about monetization all wrong. I was so focused on the traditional paths - paid subscriptions, digital products, courses - that I'd completely overlooked the value I was already providing.
Here's what I discovered: Your newsletter isn't just a publication. It's a trust-building engine.
Every time you hit 'publish', you're not just sharing content - you're demonstrating expertise, building credibility, and creating opportunities for multiple revenue streams.
Let me show you what I mean...
In the past two years, I've built several income streams from my newsletter audience:
1:1 resume writing services
High-ticket career coaching sessions
Recorded masterclasses
Template bundles
Substack Notes templates
Newsletter sponsorships
Paid community access
And that's just scratching the surface.
The real magic happens when you realize that monetizing your newsletter isn't about choosing ONE path - it's about creating an ecosystem of offerings that serve your audience at different levels.
Some readers will want your $10/month subscription.
Others will happily pay $500 for 1:1 time.
And yes, some will just stay free subscribers (which is perfectly fine). You’re offering your audience a solution at every point in their journey.
Below, I'm sharing every single monetization strategy I've either personally used or seen work effectively for other creators. I've organized them into clear categories so you can pick the ones that best match your expertise and audience.
These are the exact same strategies that helped me build multiple six-figure revenue streams without compromising my newsletter's value or alienating my audience.
Let's dive in...
31 Proven Ways to Monetize Your Newsletter & Audience
Here’s a list of some monetization ideas to get your brainstorming juices going. This is by far not an exhaustive list.
The beauty of building an audience and running a newsletter is that it’s YOURS. You get the test ideas, try things out, find what works and what doesn’t.
Services & Consulting
Offering 1on1 services is one of the fastest ways you can monetize your audience. You simply identify one of your audience’s problems and then offer to solve it for them in your own time.
1. One-on-one coaching calls ($200-500/hour)
2. Custom done-for-you services (like my resume writing)
3. Monthly retainer packages for ongoing support
4. VIP Day intensives (4-8 hours of focused work)
5. Content audit & strategy sessions
6. Group coaching programs (4-8 clients at once)
7. Quick "laser coaching" sessions (30 minutes)
8. Freelance services in your expertise area
Digital Products
The next category is my absolute favorite. As someone who’s run a 1on1 business for over a decade, I know how quickly one can burn out by trading their time for money.
When you create a digital product, you get to make it once and sell it over and over again. It’s about the closest thing you can get to passive income.
9. Templates bundles for your niche
10. Swipe files of your best work
11. Recorded masterclasses on specific topics
12. Downloadable worksheets and planners
13. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
14. Mini-courses (2-3 hours of content)
15. Ebooks compiled from your best newsletter content
16. Resource guides and toolkits
Community & Teaching
This next category is part of the amazing thing with Substack. Nobody does paid newsletters better than Substack.
Building this type of offering allows you to generate monthly recurring revenue (MRR). It takes time to build, but the valuable community you grow is absolutely worth it.
17. Paid subscription tier with exclusive content
18. Private community access
19. Weekly Q&A sessions for members
20. Monthly live workshops
21. Cohort-based courses
22. Accountability groups
23. Mastermind facilitation
24. Office hours for subscribers
Alternative Revenue Streams
The monetization ideas are nearly endless. Just because you don’t see your idea on this list doesn’t mean it couldn’t work. At the end of the day, you’re your own boss as a newsletter owner and creator.
Try out new things. Test alternative revenue streams. Nothing’s off the table. If it doesn’t work, it’s not a failure. You’ve just found what doesn’t work and can try something else.
25. Newsletter sponsorships
26. Affiliate partnerships
27. Co-created products with other creators
28. Public speaking engagements
29. Consulting for businesses in your niche
30. Licensed use of your frameworks/methods
31. White-label services for agencies
Quick Implementation Guide: Take the First Step
The key is not to try everything at once. Here's how I recommend getting started:
1. This Week: Choose one service-based offering. This could be as simple as offering 1:1 calls to your audience.
2. This Month: Create one simple digital product. Start with templates or a recorded masterclass.
3. This Quarter: Test a community offering or recurring revenue stream. Or turn on your paid subscription tier.
Start with one thing at a time. The easiest way to begin monetizing is by turning on your paid subscription tier, create a simple digital product, or offer 1on1 services.
The Most Common Monetization Mistakes
Before you rush to implement these, let me warn you about three common pitfalls I see newsletter writers make:
1. “Waiting too long to start monetizing”
Your audience is ready to pay sooner than you think. Don't wait for the "perfect" moment. You can literally start monetizing from Day 1.
2. “Underpricing your expertise”
We’ve all done this. Remember: Your newsletter has already demonstrated your expertise. Price accordingly. You don’t always want to attract freebie type of readers who want everything at no cost.
If someone’s offended because you offer a paid subscription or you’re selling an offer, they don’t need to be on your list.
3. “Trying to build everything at once”
Start with one offering, perfect it, then expand. Your offers can build on each other. Once you’ve created 2-3 things that work, find a way to bundle them together for even more value.

What if I'm not even in Substack's whitelisted countries to enable a Strip account? Is there a way to circumvent that?
